Starting in late March or April, our ponds and wooded areas host nightly music events featuring Spring Peepers. The peeping sounds of male mating calls can be heard throughout the farm starting at dusk. Hear their songs on our video.
Spring Peepers are tree frogs (amphibians) that live on the land. They’re tiny and measure about 1 to 1.5 inches in length and weigh only several grams. Good luck finding them if you happen to decide to try. They’re hard to spot.
The little frogs are nocturnal and tend to hide under leaves and around pieces of broken bark during the day. In the evening after the males have completed their mating songs, they feast on bugs like beetles and spiders. When morning comes – they hide!
As winter arrives the Spring Peepers will hibernate. I find it fascinating that they have the ability to freeze most of their body. Yet they still remain alive and healthy come spring.
I hope you enjoy listening to the Spring Peepers on our farm.
