I grow a lot of berries and pick a large amount in the wild. I am always looking for new ways to use them beyond typical options of baking, canning, freezing and fresh eating. Recently, a friend (chef by trade) suggested I try the Mehu-Liisa Multipurpose Steamer for juicing. A day later, I found his steamer in my garage. Now a month has past and I still have it. I dread the day when I give it back because this product is incredible. I am totally impressed.
I am finding that this steamer is very easy to use. The end results far surpassed my expectations. If you make jelly, wine, or syrups, this could possibly become your favorite way to make juice. It does this task without the need for squeezing, straining and making a mess. The product is versatile and the instructions claim it can also be used for vegetables, meats and steamed puddings. Next, I’ll try to quickly steam my vegetables before freezing rather than the flash boil method I use now.
This product contains three heavy-gauge stainless steel vessels and a lid. It’s similar to a double-boiler but larger and with an extra container to hold the juice. I also like the attached tube for quickly filling canning jars. The components include:
- cooking vessel (bottom) for water,
- juice catcher (middle) for collecting of juice. It looks like an odd shaped bundt pan. A tube is attached at the bottom for quickly filling jars,
- strainer (top) to hold your fruits or vegetables and a lid.
I found the Mehu-Liisa at various internet sites with prices ranging between $140 to $200. Slightly more expensive than I anticipated. An investment I’ll make someday when I no longer have access to my neighbor’s steamer.
My simplistic video shows the process I followed for making a mixed berry juice. Please comment with any questions or share your experience with using this steamer.
Happy juicing!
